Lab-grown diamonds and cubic zirconia are not interchangeable materials, nor do they belong in the same category. Confusing them is one of the most common and potentially expensive mistakes made when shopping for an engagement ring.
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond, sharing the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness, and brilliance as a mined diamond. Cubic zirconia, on the other hand, is a man-made diamond simulant designed only to resemble a diamond’s appearance, without matching its durability, longevity, or value.
Understanding the Fundamentals

Lab-Grown Diamonds
Lab-grown diamonds (also called lab-created or cultured diamonds) are 100% real diamonds, period.
They’re made of crystallized carbon, just like natural diamonds mined from the earth. They share identical chemical composition (pure carbon in a cubic crystal structure), the same physical properties, and the same optical characteristics.
How they’re created:
Lab-grown diamonds are produced using two primary methods:
HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): This process mimics the natural geological conditions that create diamonds deep in the earth. A diamond seed is placed in carbon material and exposed to extreme pressure (over 1.5 million pounds per square inch) and temperatures exceeding 1,500°C (2,732°F). Over several weeks, a diamond crystallizes around the seed.
CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): A diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber filled with carbon-rich gases (typically methane). The chamber is heated to around 800°C, causing the gases to ionize and carbon atoms to deposit onto the seed, building up a diamond layer by layer. This method typically takes 3-4 weeks.
The result? A genuine diamond that’s chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond.

Cubic Zirconia
Cubic zirconia (CZ) is a completely different material. It’s not a diamond, not a gemstone, and not even carbon-based.
CZ is made from zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) mixed with stabilizers like calcium, magnesium, or yttrium oxide. The mixture is melted at extremely high temperatures (around 2,750°C or 4,982°F) and then cooled to form crystals.
Critical distinction: Cubic zirconia is a diamond simulant; it’s designed to look like a diamond but shares absolutely none of a diamond’s chemical or physical properties.
Think of it this way: Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds grown in a lab instead of underground. Cubic zirconia is a completely different substance made to imitate the appearance of diamonds, kind of like how pleather imitates leather but isn’t leather at all.

Lab-grown diamonds cost approximately 70-85% less than equivalent natural diamonds, but they’re still genuine diamonds with corresponding value.

Some retailers provide “certificates of authenticity” for CZ, but these are meaningless marketing documents, not gemological certifications.
